Preferred answer sets supported by arguments

چکیده

We are aiming at a semantics of prioritized logic programs which always selects a preferred answer set, if there is a nonempty set of (standard) answer sets of the given program. It is shown in a seminal paper by Brewka and Eiter that the goal mentioned above is incompatible with their second principle and it is not satisfied in their semantics of prioritized logic programs. Similarly, also according to other established semantics, based on a prescriptive approach, there are prioritized logic programs with standard answer sets, but without preferred answer sets. Our solution is as follows. According to the standard prescriptive approach no rule can be fired before a more preferred rule, unless the more preferred rule is blocked. This is a rather imperative approach, in its spirit. In our approach, rules can be blocked by more preferred rules, but the rules which are not blocked are handled in a more declarative style, their execution does not depend on the given preference rela-

Dialectical Proof Theories for the Credulous Prudent Preferred Semantics of Argumentation

In Dung’s argumentation system, acceptable sets of arguments are defined as sets of arguments that attack all their attackers, and that do not contain any direct contradiction. However, in many applications, the presence of indirect contradictions should prevent a set from being acceptable. The family of prudent semantics has been proposed as an answer to this problem. We are interested in this...

A Selective Semantics for Logic Programs with Preferences

Answer Set Programming (ASP), has become a prominent approach for Knowledge Representation and declarative problem solving. ASP has been extended with preferences and several semantics have been proposed. Among the available semantics, the so-called selective semantics have the property of always choosing preferred answer sets from among the standard answer sets, which is a desirable property i...

Preferred Answer Sets for Extended Logic Programs

In this paper, we extend Gelfond and Lifschitz’s answer set semantics to prioritized extended logic programs. In such programs, an ordering on the program rules is used to express preferences. We show how this ordering can be used to define preferred answer sets and thus to increase the set of consequences of a program. We define a strong and a weak notion of preferred answer sets. The first ta...
